Highlights
What did you learn today?
We learned that methane (CH4) is created by the process of decomposition.
How did you show what you learned?
We asked Dr. Strous from the U of C questions about the research being conducted at Dr. Coffin.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to know if moving 'Scummy' (PBR) to the Learning Commons will grow more algae, as 'Rodriguez' grew a fair bit more in the L.C. than in Room 6.

May 25th, 2017 - Room 7 look here too

Welcome Room 7 students :-)

Agenda:
1. Page 2 (back of p. 1 - area) of math booklet - due Monday.
2. Create a modification to your parachute - add a hole in the top, modify the canopy (size, material, number of sides), modify the shroud lines (type, length, number), modify the weight. You may also have  some other creative ideas to engineer your parachute to preform a different purpose. You may enter either of the 2 contests - land your parachute on a target or stay in the sky the longest. These tests will be happening during FAF tomorrow.
3. F.A.F. tomorrow.  Please dress appropriately.

Dr. Marc Strous will be visiting tomorrow to answer questions we have about our work with the PBR. Here is his website if you would like to know more about him and his department before his visit.

We learned about volume and capacity today.

We completed some word problems to show our understanding. We also talked about examples (referents) of 1 mL and 1cm3

1.  Check out 'Solar Bio Cells'  (youtube.com) to see some of the science behind our U of C research study.
2.  Please sign and return the rubric from your Ancient Athens mini-project.
3. Volunteer Tea tomorrow.   Waiters and platers - white shirt & black pants, while everyone else please wear your Dr. Coffin shirts.
4.  Think about possible questions for Dr. Strous (the lead U of C researcher, who will be visiting this Friday).

We watched videos and learned information from our student researchers.

We need to see how much more the algae grew by F.A.F. this week.

We learned that algae 'eats' carbon dioxide. 
How did you show what you learned?
We got to view and clean the apparatus for our U of C research study today.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to see if the algae will grow just from the the carbon dioxide in our air.

1.  ***Unique U of C/international pioneering research study opportunity - please sign and return the student and parent permission forms (you have a copy of each form for your own records). Please return ASAP...research at school will begin next Thursday!  This has already been approved by the C.B.E.
2. The Ukelele Club will be preforming for the Brentwood Seniors on Thursday, May 18th at the Brentwood Sportsplex (1:15 - 2:45).

We heard a group's presentation about the forces.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to know how these forces work together to enable flight (and/or landing).

Please return ASAP...research at school will begin next Thursday!  This has already been approved by the C.B.E.

We learned that the mite eggs on the aspen trees in Whispering Woods have hatched!!
How did you show what you learned?
We observed the microscopic red mites on many of the trees.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to understand what effect(s) the mites have on our trees.

1. Plant sale is this Friday, May 12 at 10:45 AM. Kindergarten families will be given an opportunity to buy our plants prior to other Dr. Coffin families. We're planning on setting up for our plant sale in the Kindergarten classroom. We will have tomato, cucumber,  zucchini, peppers, basil, and cilantro for sale. Prices will range from 2 to 15 dollars, CASH ONLY will be accepted. The proceeds from our sale will be used by the Kindergarten students (which we will vote on) and for funding our L.G.T. program.

We learned about natural hazards, emergencies, and some precautions we can take (Gr. 5's only). 
How did you show what you learned?
We worked through several activities in the 'Ready Calgary Kids' (CEMA guide).
What do you need to learn next?
We need to see if we have 'most' of the things in our 72-hour kits (at home).

We discussed how fairness and equity were and were not a part of Ancient Athenian society.

We need to always understand that most issues have more than one point of view/perspective.

Agenda:

Prep for Outdoor School - Please READ!!!

You must bring a backpack. You need to pack a small pencil case with a couple of pencils, a few pencil crayons, an eraser and a sharpener. Also, you MUST have a water bottle

Medications: any medication you are bringing from home must be placed in a labelled ziplock bag and instructions for how to administer and given to Mr. P tomorrow morning. 

Don't forget your book for down times. Card games are great too. 

No Digital Devices - cameras are great though. 

Tuesday 
Luggage and bedding (pillow, sheet, sleeping bag) - it can be dropped off as early as 8:30 am tomorrow. You must be able to carry your bags all by yourself. Also, remember to label everything. There will be another school out there also, so we want to make sure we know what stuff is ours. 
- Bus will leave by 9:30 
Lunch will be served shortly after our arrival. 
Clothing  - we realize the weather is looking great for the week! However, we still suggest packing clothing and footwear for rain, snow and sun. We are outside all day and into the evening... you don't want to cold or wet!!!! We also need to ensure we have hats and sunscreen

Wednesday/Thursday - at camp :-)

Friday 
- We leave Outdoor School after an early lunch on Friday. 

- A parent or guardian or Millennium Kids is here to pick you up by 1:30 - 2:00 pm 

***If you are not attending Outdoor School, you are expected to be at school for the 4 days we are away (you will be working in Rms. 4 & 5).

We observed an experiment involving 2 ping pong balls.
What do you need to learn next?
We need to be sure we begin to understand Bernoulli's Principle (flight).
